Art History Advanced Placement

Welcome to AP Art History. This course is designed to provide a chronological overview of the history of art, beginning with Prehistoric art and ending with contemporary art, from around the world. We cover an incredible amount of material in this class, so the pace is brisk, but the knowledge gained by the end of the year is equally incredible.
For example, by the end of our course students will articulate the similarities between these two works of art:
Picture
Giotto di Bondone, "Virgin and Child Enthroned"
Picture
Mark Rothko, "Red and Brown"
This year we follow the textbook Art History, by Marilyn Stokstad and Michael Cothren, and Gardner's Art Through the Ages, by Fred Kleiner and Christin J. Mamiya.  We also utilize online resources including Smarthistory.khanacademy.org, or the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Heilbrunn Timeline of Art History. Of course it is necessary to experience art in person, so we will visit Boston museums such as the Museum of Fine Arts, the Institute of Contemporary Art, or the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem to help students learn the language of art as it relates to various media, understand the role of the artist within his or her respective society, and recognize that art allows for expression of a wide range of human experiences and ideas.  Not to mention all of this observation, analysis, and discussion is to prepare students for passing the AP Art History exam in May, which in turn allows students to obtain college credit for the coursework done this year.

The AP exam is coming up on May 8. Good luck, you've got this, even with 9 snow days.
UPDATE: Congratulations on taking the AP exam!
New project work begins May 9.  We will work on our timeline creation and screen printing our art history T shirts.
For January 8: please watch this video and answer the accompanying questions.
