ART 1 SYLLABUS

ART 1 STUDIO 2016/2017

Art 1 is the introductory art course offered by the Visual Arts Department and is the prerequisite for all the other art courses in the department.  The exception to this is AP Art History, which may be taken by any junior or senior in the school. Students in Art 1 are assigned projects from selected areas of art study resulting in the creation of original artwork made by careful observation, creative thought, thoughtful decision-making, and experimentation with different materials.  Projects include a variety of multi-level problem solving assignments in the areas of drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture and design with an emphasis on the elements of art and the principles of design.  Students learn to view and discuss works of art using the vocabulary of art and critique, as well as through art historical connections made throughout the course. 

COURSE EXPECTATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS
  • Students will arrive on time, take out work, and stay on task for the entire period.  School-wide rules, regulations, attendance and tardy policies will be enforced.
  • Come prepared and ready to work.  Students will not be allowed to leave class to get work/materials from locker.
  • Respect your work, room, other students’ work, and the teacher. No personal judgments. Students are expected to use control and clean up workspaces, tools, and materials.
  • Work quietly, stay in your area, and do not disturb others. For some people conversation helps to make art; for others, quiet, focused thought is best. In this class talking quietly while working is okay-as long as that conversation does not adversely affect any student’s work. I will be the judge of how much talking is too much talking.
  • No electronics in class, including phones, unless we are using them as part of the project. 
  • No food or drink in class except for water bottles, unless it is snack period, and absolutely NO products containing peanuts.
GRADING POLICY Class projects, homework, presentations, tests/quizzes, and exercises carry different grade weight.  In-class assignments are exercises and major projects.  Exercises are done as preparation for major projects and are short term.  Exercises help students apply new concepts or skills to a major project.  Homework and exercises are teacher assessed and graded as follows:

(√+)  Student has completed task at an above average level.

(√) Student has completed task at a satisfactory level.

(√-) Student has performed at a below average level, effort could have been better.

(0)  Student did not finish exercise or failed to do the exercise.


Each student will create a body of work in which the emphasis will be on a variety of materials and processes including: drawing, design, relief printmaking, painting and sculpture. All class projects will be evaluated based upon the following components:

1.     Objectives – Meeting the criteria or objectives for the specific assignment.

2.     Studio skills – Proper handling of equipment, responsible use of class time, respect for others and their work as well as own work, clean-up, and class participation.

3.     Craftsmanship/Presentation – Neatness and respect for your work should be evident in the appearance of a completed assignment.

4.     Design – Thoughtful composition and relationship to personal ideas.

5.     Effort/Perseverance – In class and out of class time spent focused and working. Display of effort and growth.

Students will participate in self-evaluation of their work, class evaluation (where applicable), and a final evaluation by the teacher. In addition, there will be observation and recording of daily participation, behavior, and cleanup.  Failure to work consistently on projects and behavior that prevents teaching or other students from learning will affect a student’s quarter grade.  This system will allow the teacher and the student to evaluate specific strengths and identify areas that need improvement.

Policy regarding absences:

A student who is absent from school is granted twice the number of days to complete missed work as the number of days the student is absent.  Students are not allowed to make up work for an unexcused absence.

Discipline procedure:

The rules of the classroom are as follows:

1)     Respect yourself

2)     Respect others

3)     Respect supplies

4)     Respect your art

Should a student behave in a way that breaks any of these rules, I will take the following steps:

1)     Verbal warning of first offense

2)     Student fills out Behavior Contract for teacher/administrator record

3)     Detention or trip to Assistant Principal

4)     Teacher conference with parent

Sketchbook:

Each student will compile daily work in a sketchbook that consists of work done in class or at home, note-taking and prep work, and self-evaluations.  This sketchbook will be graded at least twice every quarter.


Anticipated Art 1 Project Sequence:

Each day students will do a five minute drawing at the beginning of class, unless otherwise directed by the teacher.  This “bell work” will be done in the sketchbook and will be graded every four weeks. The sketchbook and the projects below culminate in a student portfolio

-          Day in the Life Who are you project?

-          Drawing – observing vs. analyzing exercises: upside down drawing, blind contour, contour drawing, observation, and value study with objects

-          Mandalas – study of color, pattern, and symbols through exploration of Buddhist mandalas and mixing color with watercolors

-          Scratchboard - achieving texture through line and contrast (choosing animal with fur or feathers for texture)

-          Mid-term

-          Color Theory – color exploration through paper

-          Human figure – quick figure study drawings and sculpture project based on contemporary sculptor Magdalena Abakanowicz and talisman dolls

-          Clay – pattern and slab work

-          Watercolor – Wash techniques to achieve texture and variation in light and color with watercolors

-          Pen and ink design - pattern to tell story about self

-          Printmaking – linoleum relief prints/one color prints

-          Final exam

 

Text and materials:

Visual presentations and relevant readings will be provided in conjunction with each project.
